Welcome to the Melvin Knapp Activity Center!

The KAC is a vibrant community comprised of the 50+ population of Pearland and its surrounding neighbors. With over 600 active members, more than 20 exercise classes offered per week, and countless opportunities for socialization, recreation and fellowship the KAC is seeking to redefine what the world sees as “Senior”!

Joining cost is $25 per year for participants residing in the corporate city limits of Pearland and $50 per year for Non-Residents.

The Knapp Activity Center staff take great pride in providing a safe space for members of the community to recreate and socialize.

According to the National Council on Aging, research shows that older adults who participate in senior center programs experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental and economic well-being.

Fitness Programs

Line Dancing
Monday & Wednesday | 9:30 a.m.
Exercise Room
Country Western, Latin, Pop and many variations are taught in this class. Come join the fun! Sign-Up is required.

Ballroom Dancing
Monday | 10:45 a.m.
Includes a variety of styles of traditional dancing. Our classes operate on a structured two-month schedule, with each session building upon the skills learned in the previous class. To get the most out of the experience, we highly recommend starting at the beginning of the cycle. Sign-Up is required.

Walking Club
Every Day| 7:45 a.m.
Recreation Center | 4141 Bailey Rd.
Join us at the Recreation Center as we walk around the indoor track. This group will help you stay fit and motivated. Walking provides many health benefits and everyone can join. Sign-Up is required.

Tai Chi- VIDEO
Tuesday & Thursday | 8:15 a.m.
Exercise Room
This class is provide via video. Come and experience this ancient Chinese tradition that is now practiced all over the world! This self-paced, gentle form of stretching and exercise involves three pieces: health, meditation, and martial arts.

Zumba
Tuesday & Thursday | 9:30 a.m.
Exercise Room
Zumba is a fitness program that combines Latin and international music with dance moves. Zumba routines incorporate interval training — alternating fast and slow rhythms — to help improve cardiovascular fitness. Sign-Up is required.

Sit & Be Fit
Monday | 8:15 VIDEO
Tuesday - Thursday | 10:45 a.m.
Wednesday | 8:15 a.m.
Friday | 8:15 a.m. | 9:20 a.m. VIDEO
Exercise Room
Chair exercises intended to increase core strength, balance, coordination, circulation and flexibility. This class is a fun, full body workout for anyone. Sign-up is required.

Cardio Dance/Cardio Toning
Tuesday | 12 p.m.
Friday | 10:30 a.m.
Dance & toning party class, consisting of various types of dance including: Zumba, aerobic dance, line dancing, cardio kickboxing and more! We will also tone using various types of equipment and styles of resistive conditioning set to lively music. Don’t miss this fun class! Sign-Up is required.

Yoga
Tuesday & Thursday | 1 p.m.
This class for seniors will improve your strength, balance, flexibility, coordination and fitness in a safe effective manner. Sign-Up is required.

Total Body Yoga & Pilates
Friday | 11:15 a.m.
We will combine Yoga & Pilates for a unique class. Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being. Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. Sign-Up is required.

3 Set Weights
Thursday | 12 p.m.
Using various types of resistive equipment including but not limited to: dumbbells, resistance bands and stability balls. Sign-Up is required.

Chair Volleyball
Monday | 12 p.m.
Friday | 12:30 p.m.
Chair volleyball is very different than a traditional game and even beach volleyball. It’s played inside, players sit on chairs and the ball is a beach ball. Players can hit the ball as often as they want or need to get it over the net. The net is lower than traditional volleyball, usually five feet high, and each team seats six players on each side of the net. Then the fun, jokes and laughter begin. music. Don’t miss this fun class! Sign-Up is required.

- Please bring your own water bottle. Water bottle fill-up stations are available.
- Due to limited space, you are required to sign up for all classes.
- Please consult your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Field Trips
Join the KAC as we explore places in Pearland and beyond! Field trips provide members with the opportunity to experience and explore new places. Past field trips have included Houston Astros games, Messina Hof Winery, Miller Outdoor Theater and more! Check out Knapp Happenings for the upcoming field trips.

Bingo

Ready to sing your heart out with all of your friends?! Join us for karaoke with Lois! Extra precautions will be taken such as microphone covers and sanitization between each singer.

Bunco
12 p.m. | Every other Monday
$5 per person
Bunco (also Bunko or Bonko) is a parlour game generally played with twelve or more players, divided into groups of four, trying to score points while taking turns rolling three dice in a series of six rounds. A Bunco is achieved when a person rolls three-of-a-kind and all three numbers match the round number.

Quilting

This group is continuing with the tradition of quilting that started many years ago. You can place an order or purchase any previously made quilt starting at $125

Oil Painting
9 a.m. | Tuesdays
Breakout Room 2
$7 / class
Includes instruction, use of brushes and paint. Must provide your own canvas. Please speak with the instructor before signing-up.

Mixed Media Gathering
8 a.m. | Mondays & Thursdays
Breakout Room 2
This gathering is for those interested in expanding your artistic techniques, such watercolor, acrylics, sketching and more. There will not be formal instruction during this time. (If you are interested in Oil Painting, please join our Tuesday class, seen above). Please speak with Cheryl before starting class—832-573.7981.

Games

Get together with your friends to drop-in and play some games at the KAC. These include: Dominoes, Poker, Rummikub, Mahjong, etc.!

Crocheting
9:15 a.m. | Wednesday & Friday
Breakout Room 2
Learn the basics of crochet from members. Many items are donated to local charities such as Texas Children’s Hospital, The Rose, MD Anderson and military men & women. Join this group to share the goodwill!

To learn the basics steps of clogging and dance, come join this fun and exciting group of dancers!

Jewelry Making
Wednesdays | 12 p.m.
This self-led activity will meet at noon on Tuesdays in the Activity Room. There are minimum supplies provided by the KAC, most supplies will need to be self-furnished.

ActionS

Lunch is the only meal served at the center and is provided by ActionS of Brazoria County. Those wishing to utilize the lunch program must be approved through ActionS.

Lunches are served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. Hot lunches must be consumed on premises and may not be taken out of the Knapp Activity Center. You must reserve your lunch prior by signing in the form located by the front door or by calling Darrell, the ActionS Site Representative.

Financial Assistance

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The City of Pearland recognizes that some residents are financially unable to participate in programs offered by Pearland Parks & Recreation Department but still desire the opportunity to experience the benefits of recreational programs and/or services. Pearland Parks & Recreation offers a Financial Assistance Program to make recreational programs and/or memberships available to as many City of Pearland residents as possible.

Eligibility for financial assistance is based on family size and income. Financial assistance awards are valid for the fiscal year in which they are approved and will expire at the end of the City’s fiscal year (Oct. 1 to Sep. 30).
